Nearly There!

Dear All,

With the easing of lockdown restrictions it is hoped that we will soon be back playing badminton. I know this has been a really difficult time for everyone and that some clubs will take a little while to get up and running fully. We hope to be able to be in contact soon with details of the AGM and our plans for next year, but in the meantime, stay well and enjoy getting back on court.

Urgent Message re: COVID19

Please see message below from Penny Radford, Chair of the MSDBA:

Dear All,It is with a sad heart that following official government advice issued on Monday 16 March, strongly urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and non-essential social gatherings, we regret to announce that MSDBA, has taken the decision to temporarily postpone all matches within the Mid Sussex League. We take the health and safety of our members (clubs) very seriously and we will continue to monitor the situation and the threat of COVID-19 globally with advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health England, as well as that of the local government. It is our intention to arrange the re-commencement of matches as soon as possible, following further government advice. This would be subject to club agreements, court availability and time scales available to complete the season. Please await further announcements. Therefore, could you please cancel all match court bookings with immediate effect and circulate this email to your members, so that everyone is aware. We do hope that your venue will carry forward the booking for a later date but should you incur cancellation charges, MSDBA will cover those costs.Thank you for your understanding and support during these extraordinary times.

Youth Involvement

News of a fantastic evening held at the Triangle last week. Youth players from Lewes Badminton club visited the Triangle Tornados for an evening of fun and competition. For many of the players, it was their first experience of competitive matches and, given this, the standard was quite impressive. Most importantly, the feedback from all the players was that it was a really enjoyable evening and they are all looking forward to the re-match in the New Year.

Special thanks to Neil at Lewes BC for helping to organise the event.

Get Involved

Please see message below from Julia Alkema which details how you can get involved in helping to promote Badminton across the County.

Dear Badminton Club

In my role as Sussex County Badminton Development Officer, myself, Mark Russ (SCBA chair) and Tanya Woodward (Badminton England relationship Manager) are looking to invite some of our badminton players to sign up to become part of a volunteer workforce right across Sussex. Don’t worry…we won’t be asking you to do too much, but as part of the workforce you will help promote badminton events and promotions and maybe some of you will become scorers or even umpires and can help at big events.

There will be some perks In return for becoming a volunteer but we can discuss those when we have got our workforce in place.

One of the things that we are going to try and address is the lack of women in the leagues, the SCBA questionnaire that was completed by all the clubs in Sussex a year or so ago, highlighted that almost every single club across the county in all the different leagues had the same issue with not having enough female players. We need to try and tackle this before we loose our ladies leagues altogether.

We’ve got a few ideas but we will need help from you to promote them and to support them, thats all we’re asking.

There will be more information coming in due course but if anyone reads this and thinks I know the perfect person for this in my club please send it on to them or discuss it will them and ask them to drop me an email. As I said, it won’t involve huge time commitment so don’t worry. julia.alkema@gmail.com.
